Miten kaikki alkoi?
Maailman nuortenpäivät syntyivät pienestä siemenestä. Vuonna 1984 paavi Johannes Paavali II kutsui nuoria Roomaan pyhän vuoden nuorten kokoontumiseen – epämuodolliseen ja suunnittelemattomaan tapahtumaan, joka keräsi odottamattoman suuren ihmisjoukon. Hän aisti siinä jotakin elävää. Vuonna 1986 hän perusti virallisesti Maailman nuortenpäivät vuosittaiseksi tapahtumaksi, joka vuorottelee paikallisten hiippakunnallisten juhlintojen ja suurten kansainvälisten kokoontumisten välillä eri kaupungeissa kahden tai kolmen vuoden välein. Ensimmäinen suuri kansainvälinen Maailman nuortenpäivä järjestettiin Buenos Airesissa vuonna 1987.
Johannes Paavali II oli tapahtuman sydän – hän todella rakasti nuoria ja uskoi, etteivät he ole kirkon tulevaisuus vaan sen nykyisyys. Hän kohtasi nuoria yhä uudelleen, haastoi heitä rohkeasti, ja miljoonat vastasivat hänen kutsuunsa. Hänen kuolemansa jälkeen tapahtuma jatkui Benedictus XVI ja Franciscuksen johdolla, jokaisen tuoden siihen oman sävynsä mutta säilyttäen saman ytimen.
Maailman suurin nuorten pyhiinvaellus
Luvut kertovat tapahtuman mittakaavasta. Rio 2013 keräsi noin 3 miljoonaa osallistujaa, Krakova 2016 noin 2,5 miljoonaa ja Lissabon 2023 yli 1,5 miljoonaa rekisteröitynyttä pyhiinvaeltajaa.
Viime vuonna nuorten juhlavuoden tapahtumaan Roomassa matkusti noin 200 nuorta eri puolilta Suomea erilaisissa ryhmissä – hiippakunnan ryhmässä, Neokatekumenaalisen tien mukana, evankelis-luterilaisessa ryhmässä ja muissa yhteisöissä – liittyen yli kahteen miljoonaan nuoreen ympäri maailmaa. Suomen lippu nousi muiden kansojen lippujen joukkoon.
Kutsu Souliin
Sunnuntain messussa paavi Leo XIV kutsui kaikki nuoret Souliin, jossa hän toivoo tapaavansa heidät uudelleen. Se oli suuri yllätys, sillä Maailman nuortenpäivät on usein järjestetty länsimaissa. Väentungos puhkesi riemuun, ja paikalla olleet eteläkorealaiset nuoret nostivat oman lippunsa korkealle.
Me tulemme nuoruuden innolla ja ilolla Souliin. Se on tilaisuus kohdata nuoria Aasiasta ja kokea jotakin aivan uutta.
Mitä Maailman nuortenpäivillä koetaan?
Maailman nuortenpäivät ovat maailman suurin rauhanomainen nuorten kokoontuminen. Sinun ei tarvitse olla valmis tai tietää kaikkea elämästä – useimmat osallistujat eivät tiedäkään. Tulet olemaan miljoonien oman ikäistesi nuorten keskellä, ihmisten, jotka tulevat jokaisesta maasta ja kysyvät samoja suuria kysymyksiä elämästä ja uskosta.
Soul on ainutlaatuinen kaupunki, ja tämä kokemus on jotakin, mitä et unohda koskaan. Kävelet, nukut ulkona ja rukoilet yhdessä brasilialaisten, nigerialaisten, yhdysvaltalaisten ja filippiiniläisten nuorten kanssa. Viikko huipentuu yön yli kestävään vigiliaan ja paavin viettämään ulkoilmamessuun miljoonien ihmisten keskellä.
Miksi tämä on tärkeää juuri nyt?
Elämme aikana, jolloin olemme usein eristyksissä toisistamme. Digitaaliset laitteemme eivät ole todella tuoneet meitä yhteen, vaikka ne ovatkin helpottaneet viestintää. Monille nuorille yhdessä oleminen, keskustelu ja terveiden sosiaalisten suhteiden rakentaminen on vaikeaa – ja juuri siinä tämä tapahtuma on auttanut monia.
Elämän suuret kysymykset ja tarkoituksen etsiminen nousevat yhä useammin esiin, ja tämä pyhiinvaellus voi antaa vastauksia niille, jotka etsivät Jumalaa ja haluavat rakentaa aidon suhteen Häneen.

Mitä siis vielä odotat?
Maailman nuortenpäivät ovat turvallinen, hyvin järjestetty ja unohtumaton tapahtuma, ja hiippakuntamme tekee paljon työtä helpottaakseen Suomesta lähtevien nuorten osallistumista.
Jos haluat liittyä hiippakunnan ryhmään, lähdemme matkalle 2.–9.8.2027. Teemme myös yhteistyötä muiden Pohjoismaiden kanssa vahvistaaksemme yhteyttä nuorten välillä.
Tämä tulee olemaan elämää muuttava kokemus – monet nuoret palaavat kotiin vakaampina, motivoituneempina ja ystävyyssuhteiden rikastamina, jotka ulottuvat ympäri maailmaa.

How It All Began
World Youth Day began from a small seed. In 1984, Pope John Paul II invited young people to Rome for a Holy Year youth gathering—an informal and largely unplanned event that attracted an unexpectedly large crowd. He sensed that something special was happening. In 1986, he officially established World Youth Day as an annual event, alternating between local diocesan celebrations and large international gatherings held every two or three years in different cities around the world. The first major international World Youth Day took place in Buenos Aires in 1987.
John Paul II was the heart of the event. He truly loved young people and believed that they were not only the future of the Church but also its present. He met with young people again and again, challenged them courageously, and millions responded to his invitation. After his death, the event continued under Popes Benedict XVI and Francis, each bringing their own style while preserving the same essential spirit.
The Largest Youth Pilgrimage in the World
The numbers reveal the scale of the event. Rio de Janeiro 2013 gathered around 3 million participants, Kraków 2016 around 2.5 million, and Lisbon 2023 welcomed more than 1.5 million registered pilgrims.
Last year, for the Jubilee gathering for young people in Rome, around 200 young people travelled from different parts of Finland in various groups—the diocesan group, the Neocatechumenal Way, the Evangelical Lutheran group, and other communities—joining more than two million young people from around the world. The Finnish flag was raised among the flags of many nations.
The Invitation to Seoul
At the Sunday Mass, Pope Leo XIV invited all young people to Seoul, where he hopes to meet them again. It came as a great surprise, as World Youth Day has often been held in Western countries. The crowd erupted with joy, and the South Korean young people present proudly raised their flag high.
We will come to Seoul with the enthusiasm and joy of youth. It will be an opportunity to meet young people from across Asia and experience something entirely new.
What Is World Youth Day Like?
World Youth Day is the largest peaceful gathering of young people in the world. You do not need to have everything figured out or know all the answers about life—most participants do not. You will find yourself among millions of young people your own age, coming from every nation and asking the same great questions about life and faith.
Seoul is a unique city, and this is an experience you will never forget. You walk, sleep outdoors, and pray alongside young people from Brazil, Nigeria, the United States, the Philippines, and countless other countries. The week culminates in an overnight vigil and an open-air Mass celebrated by the Pope, surrounded by millions of people.
Why Is This Important Today?
We live in a time when people are often isolated from one another. Our digital devices have not truly brought us together, even though they have made communication easier. For many young people, being together, engaging in conversation, and building healthy social relationships can be difficult—and this event has helped many precisely in those areas.
The great questions of life and the search for meaning are becoming increasingly important. This pilgrimage may offer answers to those who are searching for God and wish to build an authentic relationship with Him.
